IANTD Mourns the Loss of the Forefather of SCUBA Diving

Miami Shores, FL, June 25, 1997

The International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers wishes to express their condolences to the family of Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau on his passing. Cousteau was acknowledged as the founder of SCUBA diving as we know it. His vision and drive developed the systems, which allowed underwater activity to be enjoyed by all people. He was the first "Technical" diver, developing equipment and techniques to make diving safer and pushing the known frontiers of undersea exploration.

Even more important than his development of SCUBA systems, was Cousteau's life long dedication to increasing the awareness and understanding of the world's population considering the oceans, which he so dearly loved. He gave all of us a first look at the splendors and wonders of the undersea realm, and taught the world of the fragile nature of this delicate and unique environment. His television series and "The Silent World" brought understanding and inspiration to multiple generations of peoples all around the world. His influence is the reason many of us are participants in the diving industry. Ever encouraging the conservation of this greater portion of our planet, he spent his life pursuing his goals as befits the visionary pioneer that he truly was.

IANTD acknowledges Captain Cousteau's importance in creating the Industry we work in, and strives to carry his vision and message onward to the world of divers and non-divers alike.

A memorial service is being held on Monday, June 30, 1997 at 10:00 am (EST) at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France.
